This painting is inspired by what I wanted to see and how I wanted to see it. I decided to use water color because I wanted to see a softer look and a more peaceful vibe. Originally I wanted the beach and sea to be the focus point. But then it didn't exactly worked out that way. Experimenting with the watercolor on a larger scale made it more clear how I would have to go about things. I like how the rocks turned out and how they aren't all exactly the same. The vines were a little challenging. It started to look like grass rather than vines but I still feel like it proportionally well. The rocks might be my favorite part. This part was the one I was most nervous about because of the shading and how the watercolor can go in a complete different direction that when you wanted it to. And I think keeping the water really subtle was a good decision. I think my biggest struggle was time. The water, rocks, and vines are done well, but only because I took two weeks on them. And for the stones, I like the contrast from the soft focus point to the harsh but soft stones.
Printing
I completed four templates for printing. Two intaglio and two relief prints. With the relief prints I tried to create a mountain scene with some clouds and fog at the bottom. I made four mountains and with four different pieces of material. Regular string, twisted string, sand, and carving. I couldn't really see the sand mountain well or the carved one. But both strings printed quite nicely. Then I made an attempt to create a sun overlapping a moon but it really didn't print well. It was made from carving and a fluff ball. Although the relief one turned out better, I still like the intaglio one better because of the paint mixing together. Printing Starting off with printing from the template, I didn't think the more prints I made the less the details will show up. The first one is a relief and it's my favorite. I think it turned out the best detail wise. Then I learned that the string absorbed the water and ink from the past print and it mixes with the new one. So that was learned. When I moved to the intaglio, I didn't realize that the ink dries really quickly. So making and alternative plan, I started only not printing the yarn down the middle of the page and that turned out much better. Some I like more than others but all I think came out unique. Since the colors were limited, it's pleasing to see that they each turned out completely different. |
Bookbinding
Today my water color end pages finished drying. I mixed red, blue, and purple to make a dark blue. I also added dashes of salt and when they dried made pink star spots. I made a cluster of salt in one spot and dashed salt to make an exploding ripple effect. I also started mapping out how my shirt/cover will be cut. I also finished poking the holes for the groupings.
I fell a little bit behind. My fabric took a little more time to plan and work out what had to be done to plan the measurements, so I was a little behind. If we had an extra day or to, I think I could keep up with the rest of the class. But overall I love the project.
